A 1916 DWM Luger with a “Deathshead” (Totenkopf) marking is a rare and historically intriguing example of a World War I German service pistol. The Deathshead is a skull-and-crossbones symbol used by various German military units, most notably the G.R.P.R. flamethrower assault squads and later the Sturmbataillons in World War II. In the WWI context, it is often associated with tank crews, Freikorps units, or storm troopers. Gun was reworked for WWII.
